"US District Judge Charles Breyer pulled no punches in his 52-page ruling, which concluded the Trump administration breached the Posse Comitatus Act. The 1878 law bans the U.S. military from operating as a domestic police force. Breyer's ruling came in connection with Newsom lawsuit against the Trump administration for deploying troops to LA without his consent to quell riots in the city over ICE raids"
"President Trump and Secretary Hegseth have stated their intention to call National Guard troops into service in other cities across the country, Breyer noted, warning that Trump is using the military as a national police force with the President as its chief. Breyer added that the Defendants systematically used armed soldiers (whose identity was often obscured by protective armor) and military vehicles to set up protective perimeters and traffic blockades, engage in crowd control, and otherwise demonstrate a military presence in and around Los Angeles."
A federal judge found that the Trump administration breached the Posse Comitatus Act by federalizing and deploying National Guard troops to Los Angeles without state consent. The court described the use of armed soldiers and military vehicles to create perimeters, traffic blockades, and engage in crowd control, with soldiers often obscured by protective armor. The deployment followed ICE raids and related unrest that local officials said had been handled by local law enforcement. The court issued an injunction preventing further troop deployments to additional U.S. cities while the decision is appealed.
