"Earlier this week, one of Donald Trump's former personal attorneys, Lindsey Halligan, was temporarily elevated to the role of top prosecutor for the Eastern District of Virginia. Another former Trump attorney, Pam Bondi, tapped her for the role, and she had a chilling mandate from Trump himself: Prosecute his political rivals. In a post on Truth Social, he specifically named former FBI Director James Comey,"
"Halligan quickly followed through: On Thursday, news broke that Comey, who drew Trump's ire for investigating Russian interference in the 2016 election, had been indicted on charges of obstruction and lying to Congress. Speaking to reporters on Friday, Trump said he hoped there would be more indictments. The Comey indictment is an inflection point for Trump, who has long vowed to retaliate against his perceived enemies but has not, up until now, had much success."
Lindsey Halligan, a former personal attorney to Donald Trump, was temporarily elevated to top prosecutor for the Eastern District of Virginia after being tapped by Pam Bondi. Trump ordered prosecutions of political rivals on Truth Social, specifically naming James Comey, Letitia James, and Adam Schiff. Halligan oversaw an indictment of Comey on charges of obstruction and lying to Congress. Trump expressed hope for additional indictments. The Comey indictment represents a rare legal victory for Trump after multiple failed attempts to use courts against opponents, including a dismissed defamation suit against the New York Times and an unsuccessful 2022 lawsuit against Hillary Clinton. Prosecuting Comey will be difficult.
