A shooter opened fire at Annunciation Roman Catholic Church in Minneapolis, killing two children, ages 8 and 10, injuring 17 others, and then dying by suicide. Trey Gowdy appeared on Fox News Channel's Outnumbered and repeatedly urged tougher gun laws, framing the issue as a balance between freedom and protecting children. Later that night, President Trump posted on Truth Social praising Gowdy and promoting his novel The Color of Death, calling it a fantastic new book and urging people to buy it. Emily Compagno noted the president's endorsement, and Gowdy said he had given the president a copy while golfing.

Emily, that is the side of the president that I know the three of you know, but I think the rest of the world doesn't. I never ask him to do that. I gave him a copy of this book three weeks ago while we were playing golf and I didn't expect him to read it and I certainly didn't expect him to encourage others to do it.
