During the State of the Union address, Trump asserted that Democrats cannot be elected without committing voter fraud. He advocated for Senate passage of the SAVE Act, which mandates proof of U.S. citizenship for voter registration. The House already passed the bill, but it requires 60 Senate votes to advance. Trump requested that Senate Majority Leader John Thune change Senate rules to allow passage with 51 votes. Trump claimed Democrats oppose voter ID requirements specifically to enable cheating, stating their policies are so unpopular that fraud is their only path to election. Republicans in attendance applauded these claims. This continues Trump's pattern of making unsubstantiated election fraud allegations since losing the 2020 presidential election.
