The FBI has been asked to assist state law enforcement in locating Texas Democrats who fled to avoid voting on a critical redistricting issue. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton plans to seek a court ruling to declare the Democrats' seats vacant. Governor Greg Abbott has ordered state police to enforce civil arrest warrants for the lawmakers. Accusations of potential criminal acts have been leveled against the fleeing legislators, underscoring the gravity of their situation.
"The FBI has tools to aid state law enforcement when parties cross state lines, including to avoid testifying or fleeing a scene of a crime," Cornyn wrote in a letter to FBI director Kash Patel asking the Bureau to help state law enforcement.
"The people of Texas elected lawmakers, not jet-setting runaways looking for headlines. If you don't show up to work, you get fired," Paxton said in a statement.
