Trump DOJ Misses Epstein Files Deadline, GOP Shrugs
"Just two months ago, there was a "revolt" in Congress over the Trump administration's efforts to bury the Epstein files. Once it became clear that a few House Republicans would support a discharge petition requiring the files' release, Donald Trump himself flipped on the issue and ordered GOP lawmakers to do the same. Nearly all congressional Republicans voted for the Epstein Files Transparency Act, which gave the Department of Justice 30 days to release all of the materials."
"Justice department attorneys said in a 5 January Manhattan court filing that they had posted approximately 12,285 to DoJ's website, equating to some 125,575 pages, under this legislation's requirements. They said in this same letter that justice department staff had identified "more than 2 million documents potentially responsive to the Act that are in various phases of review". That these DoJ's disclosures apparently comprise a drop in the bucket - and have done little to shed light on how Epstein operated with apparent impunity for years - has roiled survivors' advocates and lawmakers."
Two months after a Republican-led push and a Trump-ordered flip produced near-unanimous GOP support for the Epstein Files Transparency Act, the Department of Justice has satisfied only a small fraction of the law's 30-day disclosure requirement. Justice Department attorneys reported posting approximately 12,285 items equating to roughly 125,575 pages while identifying more than two million potentially responsive documents still in various phases of review. The limited release has angered survivors' advocates and lawmakers. Original House co-sponsors Ro Khanna and Thomas Massie have petitioned federal judge Paul Engelmayer to intervene and force an independent audit and release of the remaining files.
