President Donald Trump claimed gasoline prices had dropped to about $2.25 per gallon and that some stations priced gas under $2, citing lower oil prices and falling consumer costs. AAA data showed the U.S. average retail price at $3.19 per gallon and identified Mississippi as the state with the lowest average at $2.69. GasBuddy’s station-level data, covering tens of thousands of stations, did not find any stations selling fuel at $2.00 or less. Oil near $60 a barrel and broader energy and grocery trends were noted, but the specific per-gallon price claims were inaccurate.
And so, we have groceries are down, energy is way down. Energy is way down. It was $4 and $5 for a gallon of gas. Think of that for gasoline, and now it's probably $2.25. There are some places it's $2. It's even it broke $2 in a couple of locations in the South. In places like California where they charge such high taxes it's higher, but it's still much lower than what it was a year ago.
According to AAA's database of nationwide gas prices, no state comes even close to the $2.25 figure Trump mentioned. At the time of writing, the average retail price of gas in the U.S. was $3.19. The state with the lowest average was Mississippi at $2.69. Additional data pulled from GasBuddy the app that helps users find the cheapest gas in their area revealed that not a single individual station sold for under $2.
