President Donald Trump said he could send the military into US cities under the pretense of fighting crime, asserting authority beyond the National Guard. He told troops in Japan that troubled cities require action and said if more than the National Guard is needed he would send additional military forces to ensure safe cities. Local and state officials have opposed recent National Guard deployments and have filed legal challenges, including a federal appeals court rehearing the administration's effort to federalize Oregon's troops. Trump told a New York Times reporter he could deploy any military branch without oversight from courts or Congress.
