Trump announces tariffs on 8 NATO allies in latest push to acquire Greenland
"will be due and payable until such time as a Deal is reached for the Complete and Total purchase of Greenland."
"immediately open to negotiation with Denmark and/or any of these Countries that have put so much at risk, despite all that we have done for them, including maximum protection, over so many decades."
"These Countries, who are playing this very dangerous game, have put a level of risk in play that is not tenable or sustainable,"
"Denmark is a tiny country with a tiny economy and a tiny military. They cannot defend Greenland,"
Tariffs on Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Finland and the United Kingdom would begin Feb. 1 and rise to 25% in June, threatening recently finalized trade deals with the EU and UK. The tariffs would remain until a deal secures the complete and total purchase of Greenland, with an offer to negotiate with Denmark or other named countries. Eight NATO allies expressed solidarity with Greenland and deployed a small troop contingent for reconnaissance. Denmark and Greenland condemned the threats and urged reconsideration. A White House deputy chief of staff argued Denmark cannot defend Greenland and invoked military power as decisive.
