Trump Administration Signals It May Not Pay Furloughed Workers After Shutdown Ends
"Once an appropriation or continuing resolution is enacted, excepted employees are entitled to receive payment,"
"As soon as possible after the appropriations lapse ends, you will be paid for the period of the lapse in appropriations."
Multiple government agencies sent messages to federal employees that omit assurance that furloughed workers will receive back pay when the shutdown ends. The November message explicitly states that excepted employees are entitled to receive payment once an appropriation or continuing resolution is enacted, but it does not include similar language for furloughed employees. An earlier October message cited federal law and assured that employees would be paid for the period of the lapse in appropriations "as soon as possible" after the lapse ends. At least 670,000 federal staffers have been furloughed during the shutdown.
