Trump administration plans to build 10 miles of new barrier along California-Mexico border
"U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem issued the waiver to ensure the expeditious construction of barriers and roads, according to a Federal Register notice posted on Tuesday. The projects involve the construction of new barriers near the Tecate and Otay Mesa ports of entry, as well as miles of improved infrastructure such as roads, lighting and cameras along existing barriers from the Pacific Ocean to Jacumba Hot Springs."
"It is being funded by H.R. 1, also known as the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, in which Customs and Border Protection was given $46.5 billion through fiscal 2029 to be used broadly on border construction and maintenance. President (Donald) Trump is delivering on the mandate given by the American people to secure our southern border, CBP Assistant Commissioner Hilton Beckham said in a statement."
Officials will construct nearly 10 miles of new barrier and upgrade 51.5 miles of existing barrier systems along the San Diego–Mexico border using a waiver of environmental laws issued by U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. Planned work includes 7.6 miles of 30-foot primary barrier between Otay Mesa and Tecate, 1.3 miles east of Tecate, and a 0.84-mile secondary 30-foot barrier with anti-climb features and automated vehicle gates near Otay Mesa. Upgrades will include roads, lighting, cameras, patrol roads, and utility shelters. Funding comes from H.R. 1, allocating $46.5 billion to Customs and Border Protection through fiscal 2029. The San Diego sector was the busiest for migrant encounters for most of 2024.
