"He also said a loan agreement was signed on Wednesday, with the placement of the statue possibly happening within a matter of weeks. In response to reports that the statue would be coming to the White House, spokesperson David Ingle told The Associated Press that the move was in line with President Donald Trump's admiration of Columbus. "In this White House, Christopher Columbus is a hero. And he will continue to be honored as such by President Trump," Ingle said."
The Trump administration is moving to place a restored statue of Christopher Columbus on White House grounds later this year. The statue was damaged and thrown into Baltimore Harbor during 2020 uprisings and was recovered and now owned by Italian American Organizations United, led by John Pica. Pica said the White House contacted him last fall and a loan agreement was signed with placement possibly happening within weeks. White House spokesperson David Ingle said the move aligns with Trump's admiration, calling Columbus a hero. Columbus's legacy includes the enslavement and slaughter of millions of Indigenous people.
