"The United States Department of the Treasury has developed, to the brink of production, a dollar coin that features the face and likeness of President Donald Trump, according to a source within the Treasury who spoke with Defector, and as first reported by Fox Business. The die, a stamp that presses the design onto the coin, was circulated within the Bureau of Engraving and Printing of the U.S. Mint this week."
"The rendering of the coin shows Trump in profile on the front, or obverse, side. On the reverse is an image of Trump raising a fist, with an American flag waving in the background, beneath the words "FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT." The pose seems to invoke the scene of July 13, 2024, when Trump, then a candidate, was shot in the ear at a political rally in Pennsylvania:"
"The minting of this coin, while Trump is alive, appears to be illegal. The Thayer amendment, added by a Republican representative to a federal appropriations bill in 1866, states explicitly that "no portrait or likeness of any living person shall be engraved or placed upon any of the bonds, securities, notes, or postal currency of the United States." A resource page on the website of the U.S. Treasury Department once confirmed this law, near the top of a section of frequently asked questions about portraits and designs:"
The United States Department of the Treasury prepared a dollar coin bearing President Donald Trump's likeness and circulated the die within the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. Workers at the U.S. Mint were ordered to strike set-up coins, the final step before production. The obverse shows Trump in profile; the reverse depicts him raising a fist with an American flag and the words "FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT," evoking the July 13, 2024 rally where he was shot in the ear. Minting the coin while the subject is alive appears to violate the Thayer amendment of 1866, which forbids portraits of living persons on U.S. currency. A Treasury resource page confirming the law was removed from the department's website after 2022.
