Hakeem Jeffries visited three Black churches in Los Angeles to campaign for California Proposition 50, which could add five or six Democratic representatives. The visit came amid a congressional deadlock over healthcare subsidies and a government shutdown lasting more than two weeks. Jeffries criticized Republicans for refusing to negotiate and accused them of attempting to gerrymander congressional maps to influence midterm elections. Congregants largely welcomed the message, many wearing pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
