"When you have to flee your country, you realize how important elections are, how important world events are and you know that you have to be an informed citizen wherever you are,"
"When I walk into 30 Rock, it doesn't leave me that I'm this son of immigrants, two people who came to this country,"
"They didn't know the language, they didn't have money, and this great, beautiful country gave them a second chance."
"And so I think my parents really instilled in me and my brother that we had to know what was going on. You had to know how the world worked, and you had to be really, really educated in the issues of the day."
Tom Llamas credits his parents for his career success and personal values. His parents were born in Cuba and left after Fidel Castro's regime took control. They emphasized the importance of being informed about elections and world events. They read the newspaper cover to cover and insisted their children understand how the world worked. They taught a strong work ethic and that one cannot take the easy way out. Llamas recalled unpaid internships and a moment when his mother insisted he show up for a job despite being tired. His parents lacked language and money, and the country gave them a second chance.
