Dr. Annie Andrews, a pediatric emergency physician running as a Democrat in South Carolina, criticized Republican lawmakers' 'thoughts and prayers' responses after the Annunciation Catholic School shooting in Minneapolis. She said thoughts and prayers do not save children and urged louder demands for action, accusing politicians of playing politics with kids' lives. Sen. Lindsey Graham posted a message asking for prayers, and President Donald Trump posted a similar plea. Graham is seeking a fifth Senate term with about $15.6 million reported in his campaign fund. Andrews previously lost a 2022 House bid and raised roughly $1.2 million in her first month of the Senate campaign.
Thoughts and prayers do nothing. Thoughts and prayers do not save our kids' lives. I like what the [Minneapolis] mayor said: They were literally praying. I always get online during this moments and say what I want to say, and people are like, No, it's too soon. Don't politicize this tragedy.' No, it is far too late for us to be speaking up on this issue! Every shooting that happens means it's a moment too late to be speaking.
People want to tell us to be quiet in these moments. These loudmouth, vocal minority folks on social media want us to think they're in the majority and they're telling us to be quiet and we just need to take that as a sign to get louder. Of course it keeps happening because we don't have enough elected officials in this country who fucking get it. They just don't get it. They're playing politics with our kids' lives.
