Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, as the top Democrat on the Senate environment and public works committee, launched a formal investigation into allegations of institutional capture, cronyism, financial mismanagement and corruption. Democrats say documents suggest the centre has been operated as a slush fund and private club for allies, causing millions in losses and diverting from its statutory mission. Family members of Kennedy condemned the renaming and noted an act of Congress is required to change the name.
