The Texas Senate Race Is Going to Be Pure Slime
Ken Paxton, Texas attorney general, defeated John Cornyn 64-36 in the Texas Senate runoff after Trump’s endorsement the prior week. Cornyn had previously fallen short of becoming Senate Republican leader by only a handful of votes 18 months earlier. The defeat marked the first time no incumbent senator had lost a primary since Alabama’s Luther Strange in 2017. Trump’s retaliation against Cornyn was portrayed as harsher than his treatment of Bill Cassidy, because Cassidy had a specific grievance tied to a 2021 impeachment conviction vote. Cornyn was described as raising substantial money, voting with Trump and leaders’ wishes, and keeping private doubts about Trump’s fitness for office.
