"What she didn't understand is the fundamental reality that politics is the art of relationships. She has no political relationships whatsoever in South Carolina,"
"I'm not part of the powerful, I'm not part of the elite, I'm an island of one,"
"I don't get invited to parties,"
"I don't have any friends. I have a dog."
Nancy Mace is losing support within the South Carolina Republican Party as she runs for governor. More than two dozen GOP operatives, donors, and leaders contacted during a Clemson–South Carolina football gathering expressed no support for her. A former campaign consultant said she lacks political relationships in the state and questioned her decision to run while claiming to have no friends. Mace publicly described herself as not part of the powerful or elite and called herself "an island of one," saying she does not get invited to parties and has only a dog. Observers characterized her behavior this year as increasingly erratic.
