""We knew that what we had planned was not going to happen in the way that we had planned it many months ago. It turned very, very quickly into, actually, a much better experience.""

Eighth graders from Zeta Charter Schools in the Bronx planned a U.S. Capitol tour that was canceled when the federal government shut down and the tour guide was furloughed. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who planned to greet the group, stepped in and personally escorted the students into the Capitol. The group toured major spots including the Rotunda and Senate chambers. Adult chaperones were star-struck by Ocasio-Cortez’s presence, while most 12‑ and 13‑year‑old students did not recognize her. Student Jordan Allen learned about Ocasio-Cortez’s Bronx upbringing, organizing background, and early career before she unseated incumbent Joe Crowley.
