"For months, the Justice Department has been demanding certain states turn over complete, unredacted copies of their voter registration lists, including any driver's license numbers and parts of voters' Social Security numbers. In court filings, the DOJ says it wants this personal information to check if states are following federal law on keeping accurate voter rolls. But most states have refused, citing privacy restrictions."
"The latest states to be sued are Colorado, Hawaii, Massachusetts and Nevada, the Justice Department announced Friday. "At this Department of Justice, we will not permit states to jeopardize the integrity and effectiveness of elections by refusing to abide by our federal elections laws," Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Harmeet Dhillon said in a statement. "If states will not fulfill their duty to protect the integrity of the ballot, we will.""
The Department of Justice has filed lawsuits against four additional states — Colorado, Hawaii, Massachusetts and Nevada — and against Fulton County, Georgia, seeking records related to the 2020 election. The DOJ has now sued 18 states, mostly Democratic-led and all states President Trump lost, demanding complete, unredacted voter registration lists that include driver's license numbers and portions of Social Security numbers. The department says the information is needed to verify compliance with federal laws on maintaining accurate voter rolls. Most states have refused to comply, citing privacy protections. The DOJ has also pointed to use of a citizenship lookup tool at the Department of Homeland Security, and the Fulton County action follows dismissal of a related high-profile election interference case.
