"So I just want to tell the American people, you should not forget this,"
"When we come up to midterms and other things, don't forget what they've done to our country."
"We told you 43 days ago from bitter experience that government shutdowns don't work,"
"They never achieve the objective that you announce. And guess what? You haven't achieved that objective yet, and you're not going to."
President Donald Trump signed a government funding bill that ended a 43-day shutdown which left many federal workers unpaid, stranded travelers at airports and created long lines at food banks. The shutdown featured unilateral presidential actions, including canceling projects and attempting to fire federal employees to pressure Democrats on policy demands. Republicans blamed Democrats and urged voters to remember the effects in upcoming elections. The House approved the measure 222-209 after the Senate had passed it earlier. Democrats sought an extension of an enhanced tax credit for Affordable Care Act marketplace coverage; Republicans treated that as a separate policy fight.
