Mark A. Welsh III will step down as Texas A&M University president on Friday, 19 September. The resignation follows backlash after a viral video showed a student confronting a professor, Melissa McCoul, over LGBTQ+ themes in a children’s literature class. McCoul was fired amid pressure from Republican lawmakers, including Governor Greg Abbott. Right-wing figures, including State Representative Brian Harrison, accused the university of "trans indoctrination" and Harrison posted a clip of the class. Chancellor Glenn Hegar praised Welsh’s service and described the transition as necessary to position the university for a future requiring bold leadership and commitment to core values.
