Republican officials placed Texas Democrats under round-the-clock state police escort to prevent them from fleeing during a redistricting standoff. The redistricting map, backed by Donald Trump, would likely give Republicans an estimated five additional congressional seats and could unseat Democrat Jasmine Crockett by moving district borders away from her home. At the start of August, 57 Democratic lawmakers flew to Illinois and New York and planned to remain outside Texas for about two weeks to halt the redistricting vote. State representatives Terry Meza and Venton Jones brought their Department of Public Safety troopers to the Rose Room, a gay bar in Dallas's Oak Lawn neighborhood, for a meeting of the Stonewall Democrats of Dallas. The Stonewall Democrats of Dallas welcomed the representatives and their escorts and expressed appreciation for everyone's service.

We are always happy to have Reps. Meza and @VentonJonesTX at meetings of @StonewallDalCo! We also hosted Congresswoman @juliejohnsonTX and her Capitol Hill police officer. We appreciate everyone's service 🏳️⚧️🏳️🌈 #stonewallshowsup- Todd Hill (@Yohi52) August 20, 2025
