Teenager joins legal action to get phones banned in schools across England
"Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging. At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story. The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls."
"Miss McShea, who has joined as a claimant, says she feels the Department for Education (DfE) has failed to protect her and other children from harm inflicted by phones during school hours. She said using smartphones completely changed my life from year 7 onwards. I was exposed to pornography and violent videos, like beheading videos. I was sent a video of two young children who had found a gun and one of them accidentally shot the other one, Miss McShea said. I had to go home. There were a lot of incidents like that and a lot of my friends had the same experiences."
The Independent requests donations to fund on-the-ground reporting across major issues while keeping content free of paywalls. Two fathers pursuing a judicial review that aims to ban smartphones in schools have gained two new supporters: 17-year-old Flossie McShea and 43-year-old Katie Moore. McShea joined as a claimant and alleges the Department for Education failed to protect children from harms caused by phones during school hours. She reports that smartphone use from year 7 exposed her to pornography and violent videos, including beheading footage and a clip of young children with a gun, and that such incidents forced her to leave school and affected many peers. The legal claim seeks a complete ban on smartphones in schools.
