Stephen Colbert will not run for president after The Late Show ends in May 2026. He rejected the idea of entering electoral politics and acknowledged the appeal of such a run while saying he should not pursue it. He would need to consult his faith leader and family to determine whether he could offer greater service to the nation following his tenure. CBS cited financial reasons for canceling The Late Show in July. Some observers viewed the cancellation as a potential casualty of Trump's war on comedy. Colbert plans to continue creating projects with current collaborators and new partners and does not intend to retire.
