State Department Announces Visa Application Freeze
"The State Department announced Wednesday that it will be freezing visa applications for individuals from 75 countries, starting next week, in what it says is an effort to crack down on use of taxpayer benefit programs. The pause only applies to immigrant visas, the Associated Press reported, so students, tourists and others seeking to travel from the 75 countries shouldn't be affected. Fox News, which first reported on the department's decision, said processing for all visas was suspended."
"The processing pause will take effect Jan. 21, according to a department spokesperson. But the Trump administration has not provided an end date. The countries subject to the pause are: Afghanistan, Albania, Algeria, Antigua and Barbuda, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bahamas, Bangladesh, Barbados, Belarus, Belize, Bhutan, Bosnia, Brazil, Burma, Cambodia, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Colombia, Cote d'Ivoire, Cuba, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Dominica, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia."
The State Department will freeze immigrant visa applications for individuals from 75 countries beginning Jan. 21. The pause applies only to immigrant visas and does not affect nonimmigrant visas for students, tourists, and other travelers. The administration framed the measure as an effort to crack down on use of taxpayer-funded benefit programs. No end date for the pause has been provided. Twenty-three of the 75 countries are currently under existing travel restrictions. The listed nations collectively sent more than 200,000 students to U.S. colleges in the 2024–25 academic year, with eight among the top 25 countries of origin.
