South Korea removes loudspeakers on border with North DW 08/04/2025
Briefly

The South Korean military commenced the removal of loudspeakers broadcasting anti-North Korean messages along the border. This initiative stems from President Lee Jae-myung's aim to improve relations with Pyongyang. It's anticipated that all loudspeakers will be dismantled by the week's end. Lee's administration previously halted broadcasts upon taking office to restore trust. In response, North Korea also ceased its broadcasts. Despite the ongoing tensions and the two nations being technically at war, Lee aims to encourage dialogue, although North Korea has expressed disinterest in discussions with South Korea.
Starting today, the military has begun removing the loudspeakers. It is a practical measure aimed at helping ease tensions with the North, provided that such actions do not compromise the military's state of readiness.
Although the two countries remain technically at war, Lee seeks to reduce tensions and revive long-stalled dialogue with the North. However, North Korea recently rejected the overture, stating it had no interest in talks with Seoul.
