South Korea: Arrest warrant sought for ex-first lady Kim DW 08/07/2025
Briefly

Prosecutors in South Korea are pursuing an arrest warrant for former first lady Kim Keon Hee after a seven-hour interrogation regarding allegations of bribery, stock manipulation, and political influence-peddling. Included in the charges are violations of capital market laws and claims of influencing candidate nominations in a parliamentary by-election. Kim also faces scrutiny over receiving gifts through an intermediary linked to the Unification Church. This situation is unprecedented, as it may result in both a former president and first lady being arrested concurrently.
"We requested an arrest warrant for Kim at 1:21 p.m. (0421 GMT)," special prosecutor Oh Jung-hee said at a press briefing.
Kim was questioned by the investigators for about seven hours on various allegations, including claims of influencing the conservative party's candidate nominations for a parliamentary by-election in 2022.
The charges against Kim include violations of capital market and financial investment laws, as well as political funds laws.
Kim issued an apology for causing public concern. Without saying much, she hinted that she would deny the accusations against her, calling herself 'someone insignificant.'
