Joe Simitian, age 72, has been appointed a visiting scholar at Stanford's Institute for Research in the Social Sciences (IRiSS). IRiSS was founded in 2004 to advance social science research and to train scholars while incubating medium- to long-term research projects addressing critical social challenges. Simitian has 41 years of public service, including roles on the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors, in the California State Senate and Assembly, as mayor of Palo Alto, and as president of the Palo Alto school board. Simitian ran unsuccessfully for the U.S. House seat vacated by Anna Eshoo. He holds degrees from The Colorado College, Stanford, and UC Berkeley.
