Sean Cairncross has been advanced by the Senate Homeland Security Committee for the role of national cyber director with an 11-4 vote. His affirmation is met with skepticism, notably from Senator Elissa Slotkin, who questions his potential effectiveness given budget cuts to cyber personnel under the current administration. Cairncross, a former CEO of the Millennium Challenge Corporation, acknowledges his lack of technical cybersecurity background, yet emphasizes his experience in collaborating with diverse sectors of the cybersecurity community. His nomination has brought significant attention to the administration's handling of cybersecurity issues.
Just be honest about it. You can't say you care about an increasing and more sophisticated set of attacks while cutting the very people who help defend against those attacks.
I don't have a technical background in cyber, but in my roles running private and public sector organizations, I have engaged with different parts of the U.S. cyber community.
