Marco Rubio defended the Trump administration's foreign policy during a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing, emphasizing that the U.S. is not withdrawing from global engagement despite significant cuts to foreign aid and the scaling back of U.S. foreign assistance programs. Senator Jeanne Shaheen countered Rubio's claims, criticizing the administration for mismanagement of funds and inadequate humanitarian support while expressing concerns over the implications of U.S. foreign policy on global stability. Rubio insisted that the State Department needed reform, stressing active engagement with multiple countries as proof of American presence abroad.
She accused the administration of wasting millions of dollars, rather than saving money like it pledged to do. She accused Rubio of misleading the public in his claims that lifesaving humanitarian aid is still flowing to people in need - it is not, "in any meaningful way."
In his opening remarks, Rubio said, "The State Department had to change." He urged his former colleagues on the committee to try to understand "the intent."
It is not to dismantle American foreign policy, and it is not to withdraw us from the world," Rubio said. To illustrate his point, he told lawmakers that he "just hit 18 countries in 18 weeks."
I don't feel more prosperous. ... I don't feel more secure," Shaheen said, lamenting that "American flags are coming down around the world."
