Ocasio-Cortez ridiculed Gaines for building her activism on tying for fifth with a trans woman at the 2022 NCAA swimming championships, writing, "Maybe if you channeled all this anger into swimming faster you wouldn't have come in fifth." Gaines appeared on Fox News, labeled Ocasio-Cortez "morally bankrupt and politically foolish," made transphobic comments about Lia Thomas, and challenged Ocasio-Cortez to a debate on capitalism, religion, and life issues. Ocasio-Cortez reposted Gaines's remarks and asked her to "get a real job." Gaines continues to campaign against transgender athletes, saying she was robbed of a title in 2022.
