"we want to have a ban on same-sex marriage"
"Family comes into place when a man and a woman gets married, not the same sex, "the aide said. "We oppose same-sex marriage."
"I feel lucky [our children] are in their twenties and I don't have to be dealing with what you're dealing right now, You won't have to deal with it when I'm governor, we're not teaching gender ID and sexual orientation to kindergarteners."
A senior campaign advisor publicly said the candidate "wants a ban on same-sex marriage" and declared opposition to same-sex marriage at a rally. The candidate posted on X/Twitter that he supports equal marriage but did not directly repudiate the aide's rally comments. The candidate voted against marriage equality in 2012 and later voted to ban conversion therapy. In 2021 he opposed allowing trans people to change gender markers on birth certificates and supported a similar bill two years later; those proposals were reportedly vetoed. Campaign rhetoric also included opposing teaching gender identity and sexual orientation in early grades.
