Rep. Josh Brecheen faced intense confrontation at a town hall over his ties to the American Israeli Public Affairs Committee and a recent AIPAC trip to Israel. He defended his support for Israel on biblical grounds, citing Genesis 12 and Genesis 17 and calling the covenant with the land of Israel biblically special. An audience member accused lawmakers of being 'paid by a country' and questioned recent U.S. assistance to Israel. Brecheen shifted to raising concerns about violence in Swaida and praised Israeli defense technology's benefits to U.S. security while heckling and boos erupted during the exchange.
After a man in the audience asked Brecheen about his relationship with AIPAC, the congressman replied, AIPAC is an organization that supports Israel. Before I ran for Congress, because of my biblical beliefs, I support Israel. As booing and heckling could be heard from others in the audience, Brecheen continued, I believe in Genesis 12 and Genesis 17. I believe there is something very special, biblically, about the covenant with the land of Israel.
Last month, before you even come into this meeting, you went to Israel, said the man in the audience. There is no other country allowed to take 40 members or 30 members of Congress, American Congress, to a different country. You didn't go to Britain, did you? Did you go to Canada? He continued, I'm Lebanese. I don't want you to go to Lebanon. I don't want you to pay Lebanon. How about Syria? asked Brecheen, to which the man replied, Don't go to Syria.
