"Back then, there were only three Latinas in the House. One of the greatest honors of my career has been helping open the doors for those who came after us."
"poured her heart"
"consistent voice for peace"
Nydia Velázquez, 72, announced she will not seek a 17th term, ending service after her 16th term in Congress. She became the first Puerto Rican elected to Congress in 1992 and was the first Latina to serve on the New York City Council. She chaired the House Small Business Committee and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, and helped confirm Justice Sonia Sotomayor. Known as "La Luchadora," she defeated a nine-term incumbent in a majority-Hispanic district and has mentored younger progressive members. She described herself as a consistent voice for peace and advocated for immigrants, workers and struggling families.
