Putin-Trump talks may be first step to peace - Healey
Briefly

US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin may take significant steps towards peace in Ukraine during their upcoming meeting. UK Defence Secretary John Healey indicated readiness to deploy troops to support a ceasefire, depending on its establishment. He also mentioned increasing economic sanctions on Russia if Putin fails to show seriousness. Trump aims for constructive dialogue to pave the way for future discussions between Zelensky and Putin. Despite territorial disputes highlighted, Ukraine remains firm against ceding land, while Russia seeks further commitments regarding NATO.
The meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin "could be the first step" towards peace in the Ukraine conflict, Defence Secretary John Healey has said.
Trump has described the summit as a "feel-out meeting" and said his goal is to "set the table" for a meeting between Zelensky and Putin.
The US president has said any resolution would have to involve a "give and take" of boundaries between the two countries.
Healey emphasized the UK's readiness to "put boots on the ground" in Ukraine, but also stated the government would ramp up sanctions if Putin is insincere.
