Five people have been detained in Europe, including former Russian basketball player Daniil Kasatkin, associated with ransomware crime syndicates. Kasatkin, who played for MBA Moscow and briefly at Penn State University, was arrested on June 21 in France at the request of US authorities while proposing to his fiancée. Accusations against him include negotiating ransom payments with organizations affected by ransomware attacks. An attorney claims Kasatkin is innocent, asserting he lacks computer skills and bought a second-hand computer potentially used in the crimes. Extradition processes are underway for Kasatkin.
US prosecutors accuse Kasatkin of having negotiated ransom payments with organizations that had been hacked by an unnamed ransomware syndicate responsible for 900 different breaches.
