"She'd been detained before she knew she was pregnant, but when she started exhibiting symptoms like vomiting and abdominal pain, she requested to see a doctor. She was denied for weeks before finally being seen by medical staff, who confirmed she was two months pregnant. But less than two weeks later, she experienced heavy vaginal bleeding and cramping in the middle of the night."
Cells are overcrowded, food supplies are unreliable, and medical care in ICE facilities is substandard. Pregnant detainees experienced shackling, use of restraints, and solitary confinement during pregnancy-related health events. Reported harms include severe infection after miscarriage, development of eclampsia, traumatic and painful deliveries, and ongoing postpartum depression. Some detainees were denied timely medical attention for weeks despite vomiting and abdominal pain, then experienced heavy bleeding and prolonged bleeding without food, water, or pain medication. Civil rights and immigrant advocacy groups demanded release of pregnant detainees in response to documented medical neglect and abusive treatment.
