Supporters of Donald Trump shared their deal breakers and frustrations with attempts to reason with fellow party members. One individual noted that despite personal struggles like financial instability and health benefits at risk, their family continued to support Trump, albeit more quietly. Conversations about Trump had reduced significantly, suggesting an evolution in their beliefs. Another commenter experienced challenges in rational discussions, as Trump supporters tended to disregard contradictory information, insisting they would only trust his own statements, even when confronted with blatant falsehoods.
My Dad, stepmom, and step-siblings were all in from the first time he ran. Dad had the 'Trump won' stickers on the truck and the 'not my president' signs in the yard. They have Fox News on 24/7 in their house, and Dad listens to nothing but far-right radio all day. A few weeks ago, he asked me if I had ever heard of Elon Musk and DOGE and all the great things he was doing to make us better. Well, their retirement fund was drained, they are at risk of losing their Medicare benefits, prices are rising on everything else, and the preaching has slowed down. They are still supporting him, but a bit more quietly now. The signs are off their lawn, Dad took most of the stickers off his truck, and I have had three conversations with him where he didn't bring Trump or MAGA up. It may seem small, but in the last eight years, not a single conversation happened where Dad didn't bring Trump into it. Shows me that while he is still a believer, he is starting to see the cracks.
At first, I tried going point by point using personal examples and facts from sources that they would trust. They ended up dismissing all sources that contradicted Trump until the only things they said they could trust were Trump's own words. When you point out the obvious falsehoods in his words, they say, 'Oh, well, not those words. He likes to exaggerate.'
