""When I was 19 years old, a private intimate video of me was shared with the world without my consent," Hilton said at a press conference Thursday. "People called it a scandal. It wasn't - it was abuse.""
""What happened to me then is happening now to millions of women and girls in a new and more terrifying way," Hilton said, linking her real image distributed without her consent to the hundreds of people who now have fake images made of them - sometimes without even their knowledge, let alone consent. "Before, someone had to betray your trust and steal something real. Now, all it takes is a computer and a stranger's imagination. Deepfake pornography has become an epidemic.""
""TAKE IT DOWN gave us removal and DEFIANCE will give us recourse and restitution," Ocasio-Cortez said at the presser. "Women lose their jobs when they are targeted with this. Teenagers switch schools and children lose their lives. Congress has a moral obligation to stop this harm.""
Paris Hilton joined Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Capitol Hill to support the DEFIANCE Act, a bipartisan bill enabling victims of deepfake pornography to sue creators and distributors. Hilton experienced a nonconsensual release of an intimate video in 2004 and links that harm to modern deepfakes created without consent. DEFIANCE builds on the TAKE IT DOWN Act, which requires platforms to remove child sexual abuse material and revenge porn within 48 hours of victim notice. DEFIANCE seeks to provide recourse and restitution for victims. The Senate passed the bill unanimously on January 13, and sponsors expect House Judiciary consideration.
