On No Kings Weekend, Chants, Inflatable Costumes, and Tear Gas Shroud Portland ICE Facility
"Hundreds of people packed the sidewalks and streets outside the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in South Portland Saturday, to protest increasingly hostile US immigration policies. With momentum from a massive No Kings rally Saturday afternoon, a jubilant, sometimes raucous crowd chanted and held up signs and middle fingers at federal agents surveilling the crowd from the roof of the ICE building. People in costumes spilled off into the street and up the block."
"Moments later, Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) agents rushed through the facility gates and attempted to arrest a protester dressed like a mime who was standing across the street. More federal officers bolted down the street, firing pepper balls and hurling canisters emitting a yellow pepper gas as they shot at retreating demonstrators, some of whom were shot in the back as they tried to run away from the haze."
Hundreds of people packed sidewalks and streets outside the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in South Portland to protest US immigration policies. The crowd, energized by a No Kings rally, chanted, held signs and middle fingers at federal agents on the ICE roof, and included people in inflatable costumes who spilled into the street. Around 3:30 pm, agents shot pepper balls into the crowd. An hour later, Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) agents rushed through facility gates to attempt an arrest, while additional officers fired pepper balls and launched canisters emitting yellow pepper gas at retreating demonstrators. Many were surprised by the chemicals and some were shot while fleeing.
