Oakland city workers' new union contracts approved
"At a high-level, they guarantee the following: Full-time employees get a one-time signing bonus of $3,000 while permanent part-timers get $2,500. SEIU and certain unrepresented employees will get a $1,500 bonus. This will apply to temporary part-time workers who were paid for 480 hours or more between September 2024 and September 2025. Otherwise, temporary workers will get $750 if they worked 20 to 479 hours in the same period."
"City workers may also get a raise between 0.05% to 3% - if Oakland ends up collecting more revenue than planned by the end of the fiscal year. The agreements also increase the number of days the city needs to warn some unions in advance of any plans to potentially lay off workers. And the new deals protect the right of workers to telecommute under certain conditions."
Oakland City Council approved new labor agreements with unions representing several thousand city workers in a 7-0 vote, with Councilmember Ken Houston excused. The pacts cover July 1, 2025 through June 30, 2026. Full-time employees receive a one-time $3,000 signing bonus and permanent part-timers $2,500; SEIU and certain unrepresented employees get $1,500, while temporary part-time workers receive $1,500 if paid 480+ hours from September 2024–September 2025, otherwise $750 for 20–479 hours. Raises of 0.05%–3% may occur if revenue exceeds projections. Agreements extend layoff notice periods and protect telecommuting under conditions. Side letters establish immigration-enforcement workplace guidelines and training, and create negotiations on civilianizing some OPD roles.
