North Carolina is racing against new deadlines set by the NTIA regarding the BEAD rural broadband funding program. With proposals due by early September, the state anticipates only one funding round. Director Angie Bailey raised concerns about potentially underserved areas and whether broadband providers could participate amidst chaotic timelines in multiple states. The state plans to streamline the application process despite some fixed wireless locations being deemed ineligible for funding, with a budget of approximately $1.5 billion for rural broadband.
It's a big lift with the timing window, and the big question is: What if we don't get to 100%? What about areas where there is no bid?
Bailey emphasized that the application process will be a bit easier because NTIA eliminated certain requirements, allowing the state to move quickly.
North Carolina is among the top 10 states for BEAD funding with a $1.5 billion allotment, driven by significant interest due to its large rural population.
Bailey noted that interested parties have until July 7 to prequalify for participation in the program, aiming to comply fast with new BEAD changes.
