Nigeria rejects pressure to accept deported Venezuelans DW 07/11/2025
Briefly

Nigeria's Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar announced that the country will reject US pressure to accept deported Venezuelans. Tuggar highlighted that the US attempts to coerce African nations, particularly Nigeria, into taking Venezuelan detainees directly from prison represent significant diplomatic pressure. He emphasized Nigeria's existing challenges, stating, 'We have enough problems of our own,' to argue against the acceptance of such deportees. Additionally, he noted Trump's imposition of tariffs on BRICS+ members, indicating tensions arising from Nigeria's participation in this bloc.
'You have to also bear in mind that the US is mounting considerable pressure on African countries to accept Venezuelans to be deported from the US, some straight out of prison,' said Tuggar in an interview on Nigerian television.
'It will be difficult for a country like Nigeria to accept Venezuelan prisoners into Nigeria. We have enough problems of our own,' said the foreign minister.
'The issue of accepting Venezuelan deportees, honestly, I don't think is something that Nigeria is in a position to work with.'
Trump announced that the US would slap 10% punitive tariffs on imports from BRICS+ countries.
