New Jersey Democrat faces House censure vote and removal from key committee
"McIver was indicted by a federal grand jury in June on criminal counts stemming from a visit to an immigration detention facility that resulted in a physical altercation with law enforcement. She pleaded not guilty. That indictment listed three counts of "assaulting, resisting, and interfering" with federal officers, as McIver "forcibly impeded" officers as they attempted to arrest Newark Mayor Ras Baraka outside the Delaney Hall Federal Immigration Facility in Newark, N.J., on May 9."
""Representative McIver's continued service on the Committee on Homeland Security, which is charged with oversight of Federal immigration enforcement and other national security matters, would represent a significant conflict of interest," the resolution reads. Democrats have accused the Department of Justice of charging the New Jersey Democrat for political reasons. For her part, McIver responded to the resolution by saying: "If House Republicans think they can make me run scared, they're wrong.""
The House will vote on a GOP measure to censure Rep. LaMonica McIver and remove her from the Homeland Security Committee. McIver was indicted by a federal grand jury in June on criminal counts from a May 9 visit to the Delaney Hall Federal Immigration Facility that led to a physical altercation with law enforcement; she pleaded not guilty. The indictment lists three counts of assaulting, resisting, and interfering with federal officers, alleging McIver forcibly impeded officers attempting to arrest Newark Mayor Ras Baraka. Rep. Clay Higgins introduced the privileged resolution and House rules require a vote within two days. Democrats allege political motives; McIver rejects intimidation.
