The Navajo Nation is considering a proposal to provide $30 million in recurring annual funding for tribal colleges and scholarships, following a proposition to cut $83 million in federal funds. The Health, Education and Human Services Committee has passed the initiative, which aims to allocate $10 million each to Diné College, Navajo Technical University, and the Office of Navajo Nation Scholarship and Financial Assistance starting in 2027. This funding is set to more than double current allocations and require investment in Diné language education.
This legislation provides a stable source of funding that directly supports our students and institutions, while investing in the longevity of learners and Diné speakers.
If approved, Diné College, Navajo Technical University, and the Office of Navajo Nation Scholarship and Financial Assistance would each get $10 million a year beginning in 2027.
