Multiple FEMA staff put on leave after letter criticizing Trump admin
Briefly

The letter titled "Katrina Declaration" warns against proposed cuts to FEMA funding and opposes administration plans to end climate change research. It criticizes officials including Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem for leadership decisions affecting FEMA, which is overseen by DHS. A spokesperson said placing staff was retaliation against civil servants for whistleblowing, calling the action illegal and a betrayal of dedicated employees. The statement noted that DHS characterized the employees as "afraid of change," calling that characterization an insult to FEMA personnel who respond to rapidly intensifying and changing circumstances. DHS and FEMA did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The spokesperson shared a statement on behalf of the group calling the administration's decision to place the staff was retaliation against civil servants for whistleblowing, which it said "is both illegal and a deep betrayal of the most dedicated among us."
The statement added, "DHS said that these employees are simply "afraid of change" which is an insult to anyone working at FEMA, the agency directly responsive to rapidly intensifying and changing circumstances."
Representatives for the DHS and FEMA did not immediately respond to Axios' Tuesday evening request for comment.
