"I never imagined it because they are authorities, people who, and I thought that as authorities, they defended us. But now I realize that's not the case. In this country, I felt protected, but I see that in reality, I'm something less than an insignificant person just for being Latina, Moreta-Galarza said."
"Within an instant, her husband had been taken away by masked agents. When she went to confront an ICE supervisor, that agent shoved her to the floor in an assault caught on camera that quickly went viral on social media."
Monica Moreta-Galarza, an immigrant from Ecuador, was shoved to the ground by an ICE agent after masked officers detained her husband during an immigration court appearance. She begged President Trump to show compassion while her lawyer demands the responsible agent be held accountable. She said she initially believed federal agents were there to protect them but now feels targeted because of her ethnicity and described feeling insignificant for being Latina. Father Fabian Arias helped secure medical and legal aid. He said the family crossed the border in 2024, were processed and received work permits, and that a routine court check unexpectedly led to the husband's removal. The assault was caught on camera and went viral.
