More than half of teachers are working with pupils who are homeless
"Being homeless for so long was really depressing and stressful, said Ayeasha, 47 and from London. For the first couple of years, I didn't realise how much it was affecting my son. Now 14, Ayeasha's son spent 12 years of his life across five different temporary accommodation properties. Many of these were riddled with disrepair, the mother said, with the ceiling collapsing in one."
"She said: We were moved so far away from my son's school that he couldn't live with me during the school week. It was very disruptive for him. He's very active and likes to get involved in stuff like football training and matches, and sometimes he couldn't do everything he wanted because we were so far away from his school and friends."
"From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging."
The Independent covers issues from reproductive rights and climate change to Big Tech and produces documentaries such as 'The A Word'. The organization solicits donations to fund reporters on the ground and to operate without paywalls, asserting that quality journalism should be available to everyone and paid for by those who can afford it. Ayeasha, 47, described prolonged homelessness that displaced her son across five temporary accommodation properties over 12 years, including severe disrepair and a collapsing ceiling. The moves forced her son to live away during school weeks and disrupted his participation in football and other activities. Across the UK, a record 175,025 children live in temporary accommodation, and 52% of teachers have worked at schools with homeless children.
